At the “Hühn” tourist mine, you’ll gain a vivid insight into the long and rich history of mining in the Brotterode-Trusetal and Schmalkalden region. The focus is on guided tours through disused mine tunnels, which vividly bring to life the working lives of miners from the 18th century right through to the 1990s. 

Experienced mine guides, most of whom are former miners themselves, provide insights into mining and extraction techniques, the miners’ daily working lives and their living conditions, and bring the history of local mining to life in a tangible and understandable way using original machinery and tools.

Throughout the season, you can also look forward to talks on mining topics, exhibitions of regional minerals and ores, and small events that enrich the experience at the Hühn Tourist Mine. The mine guides warmly invite you to learn more about historic mining and to enjoy an unforgettable day out with family and friends at the ‘Hühn’ tourist mine in Trusetal – and, in the scorching summer heat, it also offers a refreshing break, as the tourist mine maintains a constant temperature of 8 °C. A warm jacket and sturdy footwear are therefore essential.

The mine is open daily from Easter until 1 November, except on Thursdays, from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm. There are four guided tours every day: at 10.30 am, 1.00 pm, 2.30 pm and 4.00 pm. Each tour lasts one hour.
