Tourist Mine Finstertal
The Finstertal Visitor Mine is situated on the southern edge of the Thuringian Forest, near the town of Schmalkalden in the district of Asbach. The mine was in operation from 1858 to 1934 and opened in 1959 as an ‘educational and visitor mine’. In the iron and brownstone mine, a tunnel was excavated which contained ankerite, red iron ore and brownstone. The mine offers visitors a unique insight into the history of iron extraction around Schmalkalden.
